| Biography Dr. Gara obtained his triple major’s Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Botany and Zoology from Andhra Pradesh, INDIA. He did his Master’s in Biotechnology and Bio-Engineering from one of the premier institutes in INDIA, the Indian Institute of Technology – Kanpur. He then moved to the University of Cologne, Germany with an international research fellowship to pursue his doctoral studies in functional genomics and genetics. He is currently working as Staff Scientist in the Thoracic and Oncologic Surgery Branch at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda. From 2011-2013, he identified the role the TGF beta mediated signaling in myeloid derived tumor suppressor cells in breast cancer metastasis. Later, he moved to the Endocrine Oncology Branch, within the NCI and actively involved in identifying and characterizing the genes that are associated with familial non-medullary thyroid cancer and other cancer types. He identified a variant of HABP2 gene is responsible for causing familial non-medullary thyroid cancer in large kindred. In addition, he was actively involved in the projects that aim to identify novel diagnostic biomarkers (particularly metabolites) in Urine and Serum samples of thyroid cancer patients. His current research aims to investigate the stemmness of cancer cells to develop novel therapeutic targets and clinical trials so as to target cancer stem cells which are proven to be very resistant against current chemotherapies in most cancers. | Biography Bruno Varriale was born in Naples on March 19, 1953. He began his primary and secondary studies in schools near his home in the center of Naples. He continued his high school studies in an experimental institute for industrial chemists, at that time the only one in southern Italy. He enrolled at the Faculty of Biological Sciences, attending research laboratories directed by Prof. Giovanni Chieffi from the second year onwards. He is passionate about the studies of comparative endocrinology first at the biochemical level and then at the molecular level with particular reference to molecular genetic studies. Subsequently, continuing his passion for biological chemistry and molecular biology he continued his training at prestigious foreign laboratories. During this time he improved his ability to manipulate nucleic acids. Actually he undertook studies concerning the effect of bioactive substances (nutraceuticals) on the manifestation of both normal and pathologic genes (epigenetics), which is one of his main research strands. | Biography Dr Parijat De is a Consultant Physician in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Lipid Metabolism at City Hospital (Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust), Birmingham. He started as a Consultant Physician in January 2003 having trained as a Specialist Registrar in Wales. He has done his MD Medicine from India. He has a wide interest and expertise in all aspects of Diabetes, especially in the field of Metabolic Medicine and Diabetes Renal disease. His special interest in Diabetes is Metabolic Syndrome as well as the growing problem of obesity including new oral and injectable therapies for weight loss. He has published widely in his field and persues an active research interest. He has published numerous papers in peer reviewed journals.He has set up a regular nurse-led diabetic renal review clinic and is involved in research and projects involving diabetic nephropathy and renal disease. He has also set up community based diabetes clinics in Birmingham, which are amongst the first in the country. He has received national acclaim for the Diabetes in Community Extension (DiCE) work. He has an active interest in all aspects of Endocrinology and has regular out-patient clinics as well as managing in-hospital referrals. His special interest is in the Thyroid, especially subclinical hypo-and hyperthyroidism and Thyroid eye disease for which he has set up a specialist multi-disciplinary clinic with the eye surgeon. He has written reviews on sub-clinical hyperthyroidism. His other endocrine intersts include adrenal gland, ovary, pituitary, adrenal, endocrine hypertension, and Vitamin D deficiency. He is involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate MRCP teaching and is an MRCP examiner and host. He has previously been the trust Clinical Governance Lead, College Tutor and is currently the Clinical Lead.
