Dr. Peter C. Coyte is a Professor of Health Economics in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Prior to joining the University in 1987, he was a member of the Economics Department at the University of Alberta and, before that, at Simon Fraser University. He is a national and international expert in health economics, health services evaluation, and health policy and planning. In 2002, he was elected President of the Canadian Health Economic Research Association and he was instrumental in championing the evolution of that organization to form the Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR), a multi-disciplinary Association dedicated to improving the quality, relevance and application of health services and policy research for both researchers and users of research. He was elected the Association’s inaugural President of CAHSPR in 2003. He was awarded a CHSRF/CIHR Health Services Chair in 2000 for ten-years and he has been the Director of CIHR’s Strategic Research and Training Program in Health Care, Technology, and Place since 2002. Dr. Lauren Shaiova trained as a fellow in Pain Medicine and Palliative Care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. After her training she accepted a position as an attending physician in the Department of Pain and Palliative Care at Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC, and was appointed assistant professor at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. At Beth Israel she held positions as Palliative Medicine clinical director of the HIV/AIDS service, Sickle cell pain clinic, Cancer pain and palliative outpatient services, and held weekly clinics in the department of radiation oncology. In addition she attended on the consult service for hospitalized patients with pain and symptom distress related to cancer.
She was the Chief of the Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care at Metropolitan Hospital Center in East Harlem where she has developed the only Department and ACGME fellowship in a public hospital in the country. Research Interest
New medications for the treatment of pain in the advanced cancer population, she is the principle investigator on several ongoing studies. She is widely published in the cancer pain, fatigue associated with cancer and cancer treatment, and shortness of breath as it relates to cancer. Dr. Bob Klugman, is the Vice President for Medical Affairs for the Eastern region of Kindred Healthcare, the nation’s largest nursing, rehabilitation and transitional care organization. He comes to Kindred from UMass Memorial Healthcare, a 5 hospital, over 2 billion dollar academic system in central Massachusetts. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Quantitative Health Science at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and former Senior Vice President, Chief Quality Officer. He also served as Medical Director of Managed Care, leading the contracting efforts with payers, building registries, pay for performance programs and the quality structure which supported clinical integration for the over 1,200 doctors in the Managed Care network. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and completed his training in Internal Medicine at UMass as well. He established a practice in primary care internal medicine in Westborough MA, where he continues to actively care for patients. He served as medical director for a Kindred SNF as well as medical director for a local home health and hospice organization. Dr. Penson is Clinical Director Medical Gynecologic Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also Clinical Director Cancer Services at Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Considered a key opinion leader, he sits on the Ovarian Committee for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), whose compendia determine reimbursable therapy for treatment of cancer in the US. He is a Principal Investigator (PI) of multiple local, national and international studies, and actively participates in the design, conduct and analysis of multiple clinical trials. At any given time, approximately a quarter of his patients are on clinical trials. He serves on the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) committee for quality of life research. His research interests focus on new drug development and psychosocial issues related to gynecologic cancer care. He is part of the team that runs ‘Schwartz Rounds’, a multidisciplinary forum that fosters staff dialogue on issues faced by patients, their families, and caregivers. Dr. Donna Maria Cortezzo is completing her fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal medicine in 2014 at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.Upon completion, she will join Cincinnati Children’s for a Pediatric Palliative Care fellowship. Through the course of her fellowship, she has developed a passion for and interest in Pediatric Palliative care. Her interest in the field stemmed in part from seeing the need for pediatric, and more specifically, Neonatal Palliative care services and expertise. She has helped to develop a Palliative care program at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and has aided with the formation of end-of-life order sets, debriefing for staff, bereavement committees, staff/family bereavement ceremonies, and education for staff on Palliative and end-of-life care. She has conducted research on Palliative care in the NICU and end-of-life care experiences of staff and families. She has also participated in and led quality improvement projects focusing on pain and symptom management in the NICU. Her research has been published in leading journals and she has presented at national and regional conferences for Palliative care and neonatology. Her ultimate goal is to help establish and improve formal perinatal-neonatal Palliative care programs, improve bereavement services in the NICU for family and staff, and to focus on pain and symptom management in the NICU.
