Dr. Buell specializes in liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery, as well as minimally invasive liver surgery. He is a clinically active surgical oncologist and transplant surgeon. Previously, he was an intramural investigator at the NIH, Surgery Branch, working in the metabolism section and in conjunction with the Pharmacology Branch. During this time, he studied the mechanism and the ability to modify DNA injuries from cisplatin. Over the last fifteen years, he has worked with and developed several multiple ablation devices. After extensive experience with cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation and most recently irreversible electroporation, he identified a significant incidence of late recurrence associated with incomplete ablations. These observations evolved from his clinical experience with over 1000 liver tumor patients and through immunohistochemistry analysis and TUNNEL assays on transplant explant specimens. Hepatocellular cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide and a leading indication for liver transplantation. Hepatocellular cancer in the setting of liver failure patients has been the most challenging cancer to manage. This disease has been a focus for Dr. Buell’s career for twenty years. Biography Dr. Kewei Wang received MD degree in 1984 and got a PhD degreein 1991. His expertise has been involving in the field of medical science to study the pathogenesis of human diseases, especially mechanisms of liver disease using cellular and molecular biology techniques. Hepatic apoptosis is a pivotal step in liver diseases. Ubiquitous apoptosisis implicated in a variety of pathological conditions such as liver dysfunction, fibrosis/cirrhosis, and tumorigenesis. Dysregulation of the hepatic apoptosis leads to a common road with different entrances. A series of publications were about apoptotic signaling pathways in hepatocytes, such as NFκb-survivin, C/EBPs-iNOS, Foxa2-cIAP1, and so on. These projects had successfully clarified some regulatory mechanisms of hepatic apoptosis. By examining these mechanisms through which components of the apoptotic machinery contribute to pathogenic processes, the understanding for liver injury-repair response is expanded. Hepatoprotective strategy can be designed via utilization of pro-/anti-apoptotic modalities in future. The long term goal is to identify therapeutic targets for the treatment of liver disease. Biography Dr. Xiaofa Qin obtained his MD, PhD in Beijing Medial University, Beijing, China then became a lecturer and associate professor there. Later, he came to the United States and engaged in medical research as a postdoc, research instructor and assistant professor consecutively in Louisiana State University (LSU) Medical Center in Shreveport, University of Cincinnati college of Medicine, and University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)/Rutgers (merged in 2013) - New Jersey Medical School. He brings forward a theory that impaired inactivation of pancreatic digestive proteases due to reduction of certain kinds of gut bacteria along with the improved hygiene and inhibition by some dietary chemicals may have played a critical role in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease) and many other diseases emerged and dramatically increased in modern society, as the result of damage of gut barrier and increased infiltration of bacterial and dietary components. Recently, he founded GI Biopharma Inc aiming at developing some new treatments for these diseases. Research Interest The association among pancreatic proteases, gut microbiota, dietary chemicals, and diseases like inflammatory bowel disease ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease etc. |
Cincinnati Children Hospital Medical Center, USA
Biography Dr. Alok Kumar Verma, PhD, is research fellow at Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Cincinnati Children Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Dr. Verma’s long-term research interest involves to understand the underlying immune mechanism of various immune cells in modulating the immune response. He has completed his initial PhD training at CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicological Research. His doctoral research work was mainly focused to understand the mechanism involved in the allergenicity of food allergens using in vitro and in vivo model systems. Dr. Verma has identified seven IgE binding proteins which are responsible for chickpea induced allergy in sensitized individuals. Currently, he is working to explore the mechanistic aspects in steatohepatitis patients.Dr Verma is also member of several prestigious scientific societies such as The American Association of Immunologists (AAI), American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), European academy of allergy and clinical immunology (EAACI). Research Interest Involves to understand the underlying immune mechanism of various cells such as T cells, B cells, macrophages, mast cells, eosinophils and their released cytokines in modulating the provoked inflammatory responses in the body. 1. Allergenicity assessment of transgenic crops and exploring the mechanism behind allergic diseases. 2. Mechanistic aspects of steatohepatitis (Alcoholic and non- alcoholic steatohepatitis) | ![]() |
